Coffee Table Sizing & Placement Guide
1) Choose the right coffee table length
A coffee table typically looks most proportional when it’s about 1/2 to 2/3 the length of your sofa. Shorter reads airy (great for small rooms), while longer gives more usable surface area (great for entertaining).
2) Nail the distance from the sofa
Keep the table close enough to reach your drink, but far enough to walk through comfortably. Most living rooms work best with 14–18 inches (36–46 cm) between the sofa and coffee table.
If you have little kids or a tight walkway, go closer to 14–16". For recliners or extra legroom, go closer to 18".
3) Pick a comfortable width (depth)
Width depends on how the room flows. If people pass between the table and TV/console, keep depth a bit slimmer. If the coffee table is the main “landing zone,” you can go wider for trays, books, and snacks.
4) Coffee table height rule
The most comfortable height is usually about equal to the sofa seat height (or up to 1–2" lower). Taller tables can feel awkward for lounging; shorter tables can feel too low unless you’re going for a modern, lounge-y vibe.
5) Test it before you buy
- Use painter’s tape to mark the table footprint on the floor.
- Walk the main path(s) and check knee + shin clearance.
- Sit down and “reach test” your ideal placement for drinks/remote.
